The spider waters

Today's post on Hogintu, themed around eight.

- - - - - -

As with the snake, so with the spider. Of the many fears of humankind, arachnids too were brought to Hogintu and cast into the crucible. But while the great cobalt cobras of the dunes were engineered, the tiny safiders changed in time running over the grains.

The safider is a small, glistening azure arachnid, almost a tiny jewel. It scurries in the deep caverns and service tunnels and the corridors of complexes lost to the sands. Born by water, it leaves the nest to hunt and grow, and when ready to brood seeks a guide.

Creatures brushing its fine web are boarded and bitten, the safider injecting a venom giving the impression of dehydration; the intensely thirsty creature unwittingly bears the passenger to the nearest water source. There the warm body is not wasted.

Rule: Every movement in a location home to safiders may result in contact. Make a test of awareness on an appropriate attribute each time; if it is failed, one is collected.

After a number of turns equal to an attribute appropriate for willpower, a bearer will become distracted, and move each turn either towards the nearest water source, if known, or in a single random direction until seeing one, remaining to drink indefinitely.

Other actions may be performed as usual the entire time. Other characters may test for awareness of this passenger, and the creature may be removed easily if discovered.
