Doctor Who and playing for time

ArmChairGeneral's Doctor Who poll has five days to run, and 37 votes so far. The more it gets, the more useful it should be. It's up in the top left corner. I made my case here.

I've pondered time travel on and off recently - on a loop? - and thought about gaming it. With a DM / GM it could be relatively easy once you set a general approach, consider paradoxes like the bootstrap and grandfather. In a game without, maybe a wargame, it might be enough to photograph the table each turn, list actions or note down key events so when there's a move back, later in a game or campaign, things can be set up again.

I don't think I've ever seen anything based on time travel, like a Doctor Who spin-off, or a set of core mechanisms. Making it central to a game seems a challenge, for designers and players. Maybe it's as easy as diagrams? I can imagine it would be a fun thing.

I'd tackle a time-traveling game but I'd have to be VERY careful not to step on the TARDIS' circuit boards.

@ Paul's Bods - I know about Torchwood and love the concept. I've never seen an episode though, not that I remember at least. It was spin-off games that I was thinking about here. There are surely official and unoffical both, but they're completely unknown to me. I'd love a look at one.

@ ArmChairGeneral - You could easily follow it up, and you'd do it very well no doubt. Something like Wells' time machine would fit When the Navy Walked perfectly. Have you thought about adding it in? It could have a supplement all of its own.

A friend of mine will run a game fpr us set in the 1632 universe, I'll let you know how that goes.

Wikipedia comes to the rescue once again with a list of RPGs involving time travel The Gurps book sounds interesting.

I should have taken the Wiki tack, and looking through the list it's a wider range than I expected. Many make me wonder if they'd have those mechanisms for continuity though. I'll keep my eyes open for the games, and my mind on the subject. The concept of 1632 is intriguing in many ways and I'll be interested to see where you take it.

I'd recommend checking out Continuum, the time travel RPG. It may be too obtuse to be playable, but the background is invaluable to the logical and logistical issues concerning time travel.

Good recommendation. It was in the list Jedediah found too and I've taken a look at the general idea. It seems very interesting, like they've really thought into it, even how the interactions and outcomes would play out on a grand scale. There looks to me to be a good chance the technicalities have made their way into the game itself. Worth investigating.
