Mind on moon, feet on ground

I saw Moon this weekend. It wasn't quite what I expected, but I enjoyed it more than I usually enjoy recent biggish movies. It's understated and drew me in, with a mix of familiar elements in a form that felt fresh enough. It could have been tighter though, played up the confines of the lives and their emotional bonds more even than it did.

A lot of ideas for gaming there too, material to inspire some engaging or even unconventional scenarios or adventures. The design could feed into miniatures, terrain and maps. I thought again of Harald's cool setup Nightfall, not to mention A September of Short Adventures.

Part of the interest was that model work, and the unfamiliar cinematic air that could have been the result of the low budget. It shows what can be done, and we know that limits also encourage, force improvisation and maybe sharpen up the end result.

Today Arkhein at Rather Gamey put out feelers re fiction set in a city he's developing, a possible anthology, wondering whether the D&D OSR community would be interested and would contribute. Seems the answer is positive, and I'm sure it could be done.

A free anthology written by volunteers is a long way from a budget as small as $5m, but why couldn't a community with this many talents make even a movie if it wanted to? Our hobby skills would certainly cover story, models and backdrops, maybe even the acting.

The draw for Heroes of Armageddon just took place and the total raised was $31,057, almost twice the amount for the Storm Wardens last year. That was for charity, but profits from sales can go to a good cause too, might be higher still and help the raising.

Given the huge creative energy there is on the blogs alone, I wouldn't rule out something along those lines in the medium term, especially as technology costs fall and expertise spreads. I'd definitely want in too, if I could help. But together, what couldn't we do?

For sure. I was thinking later about how much it is, and it's massive.

Nice chunk of change. Love the full moon. Ours was blood orange recently. So pretty, but I didn't get a shot of it.

Happy Blogging. I'm off to work on Etsy a bit. Or take the puppy for a walk. She's being so good. What a little honey.

Hope you have a groovy day and eats lots of nummy fruits and veg.

It's not a great pic sadly - it was blown up too big. The saving grace could be that haziness, which makes it look like a view through a blurred port. Maybe.

Both those ways of spending the day sound very good - a honey she is. I'll be getting my fruits and veggies, no doubt about that!
