Here's a post I've just seen from almost exactly two years ago, on wargaming and D&D. Old school roleplayers might see it fresh in the light of Dungeon Crawl Classics and GW players might be interested in the comments on price and the skirmish games.

That old discussion about the roots of D&D is a good read, thanks for posting it.
I particularly like when that guy suggests it would be possible to play a D&D character who refuses to do any of the things that might cause them to go up a level.
That's just really funny, and has never occurred to me :D
Nor me. It seems to say the player is there for the space, the exploration and subtler interactions, taking the tools the game gives, but not assuming that just because there is a tool, even a major one, it needs to be used.
That might not work with every game of course, but even something like modern 40K could be played without a shot fired or a blow struck, with the players pursuing a different agenda, although much would need to be imagined or improvised.
It's a very powerful thought that's for sure.
