The dominatrix and the blunderbuss

Creators of all kinds could well be interested in this speculation. The nominal subject is the possibility GW may not be able to defend its IP in the way we might expect, but it also suggests lessons that could be learnt, potentially expensive mistakes to avoid.

Personally I'm glad GW takes so long to release some options. It pushes us to convert or scratchbuild, a step towards bigger acts of creation, more chance of breakthroughs and shake-ups, competition we all benefit from. Why not mod even official miniatures?

If you're waiting for Tyranid models, take a look at White Metal Games. The latest post even has a dominatrix, a unit first seen in old Epic. For me the 40K universe works best as sweeping 6mm vistas, or at the level of the individual in the skirmish games or RPGs.

On that note, a while back I built a blunderbuss for FireZone, a superb skirmish game by Gotthammer; I got to wondering recently what happened to the Gretchin blunderbuss for 40K, and how a blunderbuss might look in fifth edition. Here's a homebrew possibility.

Blunderbuss         Template        2        -        Assault 1
Reloading a blunderbuss takes time. When a unit armed with the weapon shoots, only half the total number of models, rounding up, actually fire.

If anyone wanted to use this in an Ork force, I'd suggest making it a free upgrade for any unit of grots, for the fact that the template ignores their relatively good ballistic skill, the strength is so low and only half are involved, more or less doubling cost. Any thoughts?

Back in the days of using proxy models, nice work.

I'm fascinated by the subjects. I'd love to know how much truth there is in that IP speculation. The way it's written up, the result could bring a major clarification in what seems an uncomfortably hazy area of law. As for variable scale and scope in settings and systems, that gets me excited, and White Metal is just white hot. An inspiring visual mash-up.
