Fifth of one, half a dozenth of the other

One day the blogrolls fill up with talk of fifth edition D&D, the next with sixth edition 40K.

If many of us are turned off by the WotC fifth, but others turned on by the GW sixth, we probably have something to learn from each other. But beyond that, it could also be a good thing if we subtracted fifth from sixth and turned more attention to first editions.

From just the bloggers in the top blogroll here, we get the young or beta skirmish games FireZone, Skulldred and It Came From Beyond the Still, the small battle system By This Axe I Rule, the wargame When the Navy Walked, the RPGs by Fenway5 and Omlet's Terminal Space and Bandits & Basilisks, to name a few near the front of my mind. Then there are resources, like Weird Adventures, and settings like Wermspittle and Kinship.

They're new expressions, visions or worlds. They rework, improve or innovate. D&D and 40K are big deals, but they were tiny once, and standing on the shoulders of their own giants. If we are still using these systems in another 25-40 years, what could it mean?

You can see what I'm getting at, but just because it's cliched doesn't mean it's not true.

What there's going to be a 5th edition of D&D you say and something about 6th edition 40k? Must have passed me by... o_0

Too busy playing new fresh games, with an innovative spin :P

The purpose of miniatures is to WOO WOMEN!

@ Frontline Gamer - You certainly light new paths. I did wonder if they'd pass me by, but I couldn't help tracking them out the corner of my eye; I like them where I can see them.

@ scottsz - I will opine that the miniatures themselves are far too often men and not often enough AMOEBAE.

You can't dodge miniature sexism by hiding behind amoebae.

The use of simple cellular organisms violates the social contract!

Savage!

Porky said...

Ah, that I could only hide behind an amoeba.

I put it to you thus, that to the extent that the social contract is born of the state of nature, inclusion of the simple cellular organism is unavoidable, even essential, and, moreover, highly desirable.

To suggest otherwise is to obfuscate in the cognition of the past, present and, most assuredly, future state of life on earth. Further, it betrays the complexes of complexitism!

Yes. To whit, you stand upon the desk to feel taller; the humble amoeba stands upon the desk to look at things in a different way.

scottsz said...

Touché, good sir.

But you are guilty of BadWrongFun, as civilized people already know The Truth: that it's amoebae all the way down...

Just to jump in on the zeitgeist,I am announcing later today my release of the newly christened, By This Fifth Axe, I Rule 40K.

scottsz said...

Kutalik, you filthy whore... fragmenting the market with a 'new edition' cash grab!

TO ARMS! EDITION WAR!

(where's my blue face paint, dammit?!?!)

Porky said...

Since when has blue been the colour of edition wars? Fragmenting the conflict now, eh? We'll fix you. By a process of community feedback and leaks of possibly-official-part-unsanctioned-maybe documents. You'll regret it.

* I'll use the Buttafuoco defense *

It's not me on that videotape!

I suspect that's not the first time Scott's used that defense.

I'm just glad that in a world packed full of consoles and online games people still like getting together and playing rpg's

Porky said...

Me too. That said, any form of constructive get-together is at root a good thing, even if it's only electronic. You guys made this one.
