When dice roll players

Here's my Flash Fearsday for this week, following on from the last post on an unusual way to use dice. As ever, it's a 140-character horror story, and anyone can write one.

"Damned dice!"
He rolls. Agitated, they hit the floor, come up a double 1. Dead.
He kicks them, slips, doesn't get up. He never plays again.

It's sometimes suggested that horror is always at its core about reinforcing the morality of society. This short tale points out the hazards of blasphemy. :)

I think there's truth in that. Collectively we might well keep ourselves within certain limits, a comfort zone. Adapting to it, digging down and snuggling in. Why would we ever want to leave if we're happy? There could be a strong natural reaction against crossing those limits, in that we might recognise we're not necessarily able to deal with what lies beyond, or able to react quickly enough to keep a current order intact. This could be especially true with division in the society, with different groups having very different interests. A shock dose of what could be waiting might help keep us all where we are. Then again, every dose could be building the resistance.

Here though I was thinking more of that idea from the last post, the idea that what we think of as random might not be, and might just be us not looking deeply enough into structures. If it is, who knows how deep the thing goes, and what the underlying order could be, what connections exist? And what could be watching or what power we really have..?

Later rather than sooner I hope. Keep those ocular protruberances peeled and the cortex calm...
