Light in the labyrinth

If you could use a light-based lifeform idea, and especially if you play Labyrinth Lord or a similar system, check out what Hereticwerks have done with the lens flayer concept.

Light also comes up in one of their spaceship-sized monsters for Terminal Space and the adaptation of the Horla. They're part of the Rogue Space project too, and if you're interested in that, articles are needed for an at-cost quarterly Fenway5 is working on.

It's all a pretty good reminder of the potential for development via blogs. Saying that, I'm putting together the next 40K OSR? post and I can't help thinking there's still not much.

Great links, as always, Porky. On the subject of light, I'm reminded of Optilux (Alan Moore's Braniac stand-in in Supreme) and alien of pure light and self-style messiah who went around transforming whole cities into light to forcibly convert them.

Great concept, the Brainiac version too. I'd say we could do with more of the less tangible concepts teased out for infusion into gaming, for deeper and more surprising worlds and fresher perspectives on our own. More light!

But when dealing with something formed of light, would that mean they / it could also travel at the speed of light? Movement rules would have to be re-thought. Great posting :)

Good point. The original concepts were of beings that acted in a very different way, and were actually within or of light itself, but that approach, and things tied up with it like potential for movement at the speed of light, could clearly pose problems in representation in-game in some systems, if we go the traditional profile path at least. But that does open the door to needing special means to deal with them, maybe accelerating one or more characters up to that speed, or changing their nature in another way. Hereticwerks suggest avenues we could go with that, with the associations with darkness and reflection. Maybe something like the Nochrono area effect, with characters passing onto another scale or into another space?
