Out of ideas for mash-ups or the next big thing?
For the
A-Z Challenge I'm posting 26 suggestions for new genres. How serious each is I leave you to decide; I have my eye firmly on
this debate.
Dis-Atlantean
An evocation of sublime tensions in which the expectation of an emergent mythic event rises as interest in the event falls; the status quo post is regarded as unremarkable and the early magic is forgotten. A large and diverse range of protagonists and perspectives may shrink to the person of a lone observer, or to a final fading of awareness. You could think of it as the Platonic Dialogue meets the Third Age of Middle-earth meets Memento.

Did you ever read Alan Moore's story "For the Man Who Has Everything?" I'm reminded of the alterna-take on Jor-El, who foretold planetary doom... and was wrong! :-)
I didn't, but the overview suggests it was a good one. I like the frame and the way Jor-El deals with the aftermath, and generally the idea of exploring that kind of alternate history. Looking at the aftermath and playing with chronology and reflection could be an interesting development of the dis-Atlantean idea. And you've reminded me in turn of that episode of Red Dwarf with the despair squid, Back to Reality, which is a pretty good blend as well.
Sounds challenging and interesting and anything meeting Memento I'm up for! Fellow A-Zer:

The Third Age meets Memento? I'm not entirely certain I have fully wrapped my head around that high concept...but I like it.
I feel a similar way. These are all well and good as concepts, but wouldn't necessarily be very easy genres to write in. I'm not sure I'd be up it. Anyone actually using one in an attempt to break new ground would need to factor in that unfamiliarity, the lack of a precedent or existing guidelines. That's part of the deal, and of course a lot of what makes it worthwhile.
