If you have an interest in either game design, miniatures or D&D, or the space where wargaming and roleplaying meet, have a look at this discussion at Kings Miniatures.
It focuses on a model available to WotC and references Paizo and GW, and it won't be everyone's ideal, but the point for me is a much wider one: with the blogs, forums and crowdfunding we have today, under the OGL or not, more or less that same business model - or a better one - is open to any dedicated group with a good range of talents.
If that's you, there's no time like now to start talking to people. If you need a sounding board or suggestions, I'm as happy to help as always, and readers here might be too.
Here's something that could be encouraging, ideas from Shawn at Blue Table Painting.
Update: ArmChairGeneral has a link to the first part of a panel discussion on design.

I hope to one day establish myself as a game designer so I'm always eating stuff like this up.
Looking at the work you've done on Rogue Space, it seems entirely possible you could, and you're already moving fast down that road. I've just updated the post with a link to something else you might like.
