Zombie derival

It's the end of the A to Z of possible new genres.

At some point soon I'll group all 26 entries into a single post for easy reference as with last year's.

Right the way through the run I've had this debate in mind, and lately also this discussion. I still do, and it's still for you to decide how serious it all is.

Zombie derival

A chronicle of the flowering of a new kind of awareness in the decay following a zombie apocalypse. It may be that the more intact zombies evolve group feedback mechanisms allowing completion of more complex tasks, or that the less intact zombies realise their still-animated body parts are the basis for new technologies, exploited by the uninfected, or outsiders, or new lifeforms which have emerged in the interim. You could think of it as Day of the Dead - or Cold Lazarus - meets Videodrome meets "The Measure of a Man".

One theme of David Zindell's Neverness books was that new life (and new possibilities) can evolve out of what was previously thought to be mere destruction. (Whole galaxies were "destroyed" by making stars go supernova before their time, but that energy was harnessed in some craaazy new ways...)

That makes me think of the collapse in Tipler's Omega Point. Ideas like this and creative destruction really come down to the judgement on what's destroyed and why, and who's doing the judging. I think the key with zombie derival is the sense of it being our own destruction, or rather our not-quite destruction...
