All ways runs on

Once again the list of fictional portals is completely up to date!

Despite the time it's taken, it was excellent fun, a mind-expanding adventure. Every time I went back to add more, it inspired me, and I'd recommend anyone with an interest in fiction has a browse.

It's not complete of course. If you have any suggestions or can fill the blanks in the clarification needed section, please do, and if you can say how imaginary a portal is in its fictional universe, that would help too. The plan is to mark those entries with an asterisk.

An index by universe would also be a very useful thing. One day.

Thanks again to all the contributors to the project so far, especially those who just kept coming back with more, and yet more... Here's the full list, with Dave the latest addition.

Groovy.

Just added a few more for consideration.

@ The Happy Whisk - Groovy it is, even as the list grows again..!

@ Jennie - Thanks! I'll get to work on adding those, hopefully later today. The numbers from single sources make me see again the logic of that index.

The Ghalamander/Zidrii Warp Drive is interstellar. Tessering is pretty much infinite. The Sphinx Tomb has time travel, while the Third Cave Tomb takes (well, before the Pax sealed it, anyway) to another planet. With the Sphinx Tomb, it's weird - some people might be able to control when, but I don't know for sure. The Shrike is his own thing, but he can teleport pretty much anywhere. I'm going to ask /r/firefly and /r/scifi just what the exact nature of the core boost is.

Thanks for that. It looks enough that when I go back to it these entries can be moved into the right place. That core boost has been trouble..!

Yep. From here: http://www.fireflywiki.org/Firefly/FireflyUniverse#RoomtoGrow

"Officially, the exact nature of Faster Than Light (FTL) travel has never been explained – as with much of the technology of the setting the 'rules' are: "it just works that way: use it and move on." Unofficially, Joss has mentioned that he doesn't *think* Serenity has FTL capability, and the planets and moons across which the crew travels must be very close together. [1] Then again, Joss also said that science questions make him cry, so take that with a grain of salt.

* JW may have assumed that if humanity were to leave Earth, the effort involved would require we first locate a stellar system with an abundance of potential worlds and moons fit for terraforming, perhaps even having two or three suns (like Centauri Alpha, Beta & Proxima) close enough together to allow a fast interplanetary ship to cross between them. ** Also, many of the inhabited 'worlds' in Firefly seem to be the moons of gas giants, and the language of spaceflight used by Wash suggests orbital motion, despite Reynolds' comments about the 'edge of space' and 'the galaxy', which relate more to his manner of speech, to his character, and historical aspects within the show.
* If these gas giants were larger than (say) Jupiter, many of their moons would resemble Earth in size. Perhaps the central sun is also much larger than our own, meaning that the range of orbits in which habitable worlds might be terraformed would also be more distant and fill a much broader band of space.
* There are all kinds of comments consistent with the idea that FTL is not available, but that gravity and inertial control technologies or drives, together with suspended animation, are commonplace.
* Perhaps the abandoning of Earth was not a scattering among the stars, but a stream of slowboats threading their way to a single well researched and pre-prepared destination.
* This whole process would, of course, take centuries to accomplish... hence the five century leap into the future... just a thought
* There are, of course, other theories.(http://www.fireflywiki.org/Firefly/MCTheory)"

Thanks for this - I hope it wasn't too hard to find.

My understanding of it all is that the core boost probably isn't an FTL drive, and so not something to include even by our fairly broad criteria; if we include a non-FTL, there's a stronger argument for including any kind of engine.

Rather than delete it on the basis of that alone, I've added a new section at the bottom of the page, 'removal suggested', with a link back here, to leave it open to rescue.

Added a few more to the list. May have a few more in a day or so, after this current project gets completed.

Thanks, and especially for linking - that saves time in checking and placing. I'll add them in at some point soon, hopefully in the next few hours.
