Ravelling yarns

I've got it into my head to use the blog for something that might be more unusual for the non-roleplayers. Random snippets of writing on no particular subject. A chance to get some of my more coherent ideas out in some form or other, in an irregular way. I'm thinking bits of background for games that might or might not exist, as well as locations, characters or objects that could come in handy for anyone working with the imagination and at a loose end. That means DM/GMs, wargamers and writers. Basically the people that visit the blog. Things to get the creative juices flowing. Pretty much anything. A certain amount will be dross, maybe most - and possibly all - but it can't do any harm. You can always just ignore it.

How's that for a statement of intent?

If I feel the same way when the mood strikes, I'll put something up.

Sounds good. I like blogs that do all kinds of stuff. Why not have fun with it?

Just about done with my writing for the day, and then I get to clean. Oh joy.

Happy Winter :-)

An Excerpt from my When The Navy Walked Novel Between Spears and Steam

Chapter One

The battle won, scores of dead Zulus littered the ground about our machines their shield and bodies broken. Despite the small victory, the war had only recently begun and there would be many more battles to come. Queen Victoria was not one who would take lightly to her subjects – and the Zulus were her subjects regardless of what they thought – denying her.

It was mid afternoon and the men were taking a much-earned break. The scorching sun beat down on my men who were already tired from the long march from Islandawana let alone the skirmish. I watched them as they quenched their thirst from water skins before opening my own water skin and taking refreshment. Despite the men’s fatigue, we needed to finish setting up camp before the night fell and I would be damned if we were going to be caught unprepared.

“OK boys break is over start getting ready to setup camp. We need to be ready in case those Zulus attack us again. Lieutenant Winston you setup those Mark II Steambots of yours up by the supply wagons, park the Klingston near them, and setup a position to secure the camp. The site of the Land Cruiser should keep any scouts far enough away for the company to get some rest tonight and if our enemies get too close.” I let the thought finish itself.

“Sergeant Kippur, kindly ensure that your boys stack their Martini Henrys next to your section this time instead of near the mess hall. Lord knows we do not want any of those devils coming out at us while we are unarmed. Major Brinton, come with me we need to discuss our plans with Master Engineer Hampton.”

@ The Happy Whisk - I like a mix too, but then I am a mixed nut now..! All the best with the cleaning. It's good pondering time, and a timeless activity - think of it as a rite of existence that puts us in touch with generations past and future. We'll be a little less alive when we don't have to pick up after ourselves.

@ ArmChairGeneral - Are you trying to upstage my efforts before I've even started? I thought I'd have time to fall flat on my face first. For the same reason I'm the wrong person to be giving feedback, but you've set a scene drenched in atmosphere and could well have hooked a few readers with it. Is this an exclusive?

@Porky - I am sorry. I did not mean to upstage you my friend. From your post I had thought you were asking for submissions.

This is part of Chapter One of a fiction set in the universe of When the Navy Walked. WTNW is a miniature game of epic conquest where steam-powered machines do battle aside rank and file infantry. The game is set in a Steampunk VSF universe. This is a snippet from a book that is part of that universe.

No need to apologise! I just don't think I'm cut out yet to host literary output..! That said, it makes a very welcome addition, and hopefully you've generated some strong interest. And the game itself looks like great fun from what I've seen over at your blog.

You've set me thinking though. There are plenty of us out there with ideas to express and our own game worlds to explore in writing too. I'm wondering whether we couldn't pool efforts and put together some kind of blogger group, get a banner and a dedicated blogroll on our sites and once a week for example put up links to the output of the members. What do you think?

Does anyone else have any thoughts on doing something like this?

I actually enjoy cleaning, cooking and all that household stuff. Especially after a writing session. Thanks for being a mixed nut.

Making soup now .... Mmmm ... smells wonderful.

RPG Now has something that puts updated blogs or something together, like I think you mean. You might get some good ideas there.

For me, I just blog for fun, while I'm working on the manuscript.

Thanks - I'll take a look! And I'll be looking for clues on what it is you're writing... I have good food, Roald Dahl and snow so far.

I write little kids stories. Working on a manuscript now and really having a fun go of it.
