SF, lies and videotape

The assured Asking the Wrong Questions has another good review today, this time of Tron: Legacy. I hadn't got my hopes up about the film anyway, for the same hard knocks mentioned in the first paragraph, so the review should have been a comfortable read.

But it's far less comfortable factoring in the bulletin up today at OnFiction. If we trust the study - I don't know if I do - certain suspicions about mass media harden a touch more.

If you want to read around, Damien G. Walter also looked a day or two ago at the same basic subject, truth and beauty in sci-fi. I put my thoughts too.

Wondering then about Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie seems right, and it can only do good. Drathmere at the 40K Hobby Blog gives a view I can see a truth in.

I could see them doing the entire ultramarines book as a three part miniseries. Maybe the attack with the Tyranids on Ultramar as a movie?

If there's a market, they surely would, and the Tyranid attack would keep another set of fans happy. It fits the argument that if we support this one, there'll be more, and everyone will gain in some way.

I don't buy it though. Not because I don't expect more movies, but because I just don't believe the movies are worth having. I'm not sure they could do justice to the material. For me the mean age of the audience - regardless of the rating - along with its masculinity and the expectations of action cinema today mean there are too many compromises to make.

I'm hoping it satisifies anyone who forks out. There was a time I'd have been glad of it. I just hope the overall effect is no worse than neutral.

Finally, to help classify the rant, I'll say 'Bah! Humbug!'

It'd be a nice change to 'old girlfriend comes back into old flame's life, old flame and girlfriend hit it off, girlfriend's guy calls back and apologizes (montage ensues complete with memories of former guy's love life), new guy backs down, girlfriends old friend get together but they realize that it isn't going to work, current guy comes back but ends up gay, old guy and girlfriend get together and live happily ever after (another montage)

That puts it in perspective! Seems every genre has its woes, and on reflection I suppose I do prefer ours to those of the romcommers
