Speculative siblings told off for squabbling?

Here's a brief update on that article respected sci-fi author David Brin wrote at the Institute for Ethics & Emerging Technologies.

Three more comments have been posted, from some familiar names in our part of the blogosphere. That makes six in total. I suppose we just wait.

If you haven't already read it, it's quite short. I'll bet you have a thought or two.

Jennie's reply hasn't been released yet, but you can read it here at her blog.

Our host is so modest he neglects to inform us that he wrote one of the comments to Brin's post! Very thoughtful comment, Porky, although I don't think Brin meant to apply his argument to every fantasy work.

The others also had some very thought-provoking and well-reasoned responses (as opposed to the nerdrage I was expecting to see directed against someone who brushes against the unquestioned tropes of fantasy or SF).

Brin has been talking about this stuff for awhile; I think he's the one who compared the political philosophy of Star Wars to Star Trek, and found the former wanting.

By the way, Jenny's comment is up now, too.

I'm very proud of us all for holding back the nerdrage..!

I can see what he's getting at, but it strikes me as terribly imprecise, and potentially harmful to many other authors.

I'd like to read that Star Wars / Star Trek essay.

Thanks for the info - I've updated the post.
